The United States has operated under as a democratic constitutional republic since 1789, when its Constitution was ratified. That Constitution established a triparte federalism system with three federal branches, a Congress, an Executive, and a Judiciary, with supremacy over a number of sovereign states, listed above. With the exception of the State of Louisiana, the Federal Government and all the States utilize a common law system.
The bulk of United States law -- including criminal, contract and tort -- is State law interpreted and enforced by the States alone.
