Right of Publicity refers to the common law right to charge for (or bar entirely) the use of one's name or likeness in commercial advertising. It evolved out of the Right of Privacy and is often referred to as a "subset" of the Right of Privacy, even though most legal scholars consider to be a property right in addition to constituting a personal right.
Athletes and other celebrities can make as much as several hundred million dollars a year from licensing their Right of Publicity.
