Turkey is a Muslim nation but constitutionally it is a secular state. It is a republic with a multi-party parliament, the Grand National Assembly in the capital Ankara.

The population of Turkey is approximately 78 million. Turkey is firmly resolved upon becoming a member of the European Union (EU) and the prospect of its membership is perceived in some quarters of Europe as a crisis for the EU.

Thus, a study of the Turkish Legal System provides a perfect opportunity to assess the requirements of the EU in respect to the principles and performance of legal systems that satisfy the EU’s requirements for membership and to demonstrate that Islamic culture is not incompatible with a secular state and a secular legal system. The Turkish Legal System is in fact based on the Swiss Civil Code and has been since 1926.

Turkey is a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights and accordingly it accepts the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights.
